Magnesium is an essential* mineral, while glycine (glycinate) is a nonessential* amino acid. Magnesium is the busiest mineral in our bodies. Magnesium performs or enhances more than 330 reactions on a daily basis. Glycine (glycinate) is an inhibitory amino acid, meaning it calms our systems overall. In order for a mineral to be absorbed, it must attach to a protein or amino acid. Magnesium Glycinate contains 20% magnesium and 80% glycine. The combination is very useful in helping us sleep, relaxing our muscles, and supporting our adrenal gland system. The wonderful feature of magnesium glycinate is that in general it will not involve your bowel function. Many magnesium salts will affect our bowels and have a laxative like effect. Not so with magnesium glycinate. It is our number 1 selling magnesium salt.
*Essential refers to those nutrients that one MUST get from food and supplements as the body does NOT make it. Nonessential refers to those that the body CAN make if it has all the appropriate building block nutrients.
